The Porsche RS 61 is complete and back on the road, the rolling road that is. The team at Maxted-Page and Prill were very pleased to see the engine develop over 200bhp, which was good for 135mph with the Le Mans gearing. The car rebuild was completed in early May with the newly installed gear box and engine mounted, following the installation of the electrics, the plumbing in of the water system and completion of the suspension and brakes.
Stirling made a visit to the team's engineering workshop for a seat fitting and a look over his now immaculate looking RS 61, albeit without a period nose badge, which is coming all the way from Mexico, a country that produced a number of wins for Stirling during his racing career. Weighing in at 600kg, the car has an excellent power to weight ratio, the high revving engine providing strong delivery across the rev band, not surprisingly then, Stirling is very much looking forward to testing it at Silverstone this month. The passenger seat will be occupied by a well known individual and be filmed for transmission by the BBC in July.
In the meantime the car, with Stirling, can be seen together for the first time in the United Kingdom at the Theatre Royal, Bury St. Edmunds, Sunday 29th May, at a small static exhibition of his race cars, some of which have rarely been seen in public. Andy Prill and his team deserve huge credit for getting the RS 61 back on the road and ready for the race track in such a short period of time, prepared and presented to their very high standards.
