Following an accident at his home in Mayfair on Saturday evening, as a result of a lift malfunction, Sir Stirling Moss suffered two broken ankles, four broken bones to his foot, skin abrasions and four chipped vertebrae. He is now comfortable and recovering in a London hospital after surgery to both ankles.
His immediate family were present with him at the time of the accident, Paramedics were called and he was taken to the Royal London Hospital. He remained conscious throughout. With the assistance of Professor Sid Watkins he was moved on Sunday to a hospital closer to his home where he underwent surgery on both his ankles, which were plated and pinned.
The accident occurred as a consequence of falling down three floors in the lift shaft at his home. The door to the lift, that should have remained locked if the lift was not on the floor that it was called from, opened in error. He stepped into the narrow open shaft in the expectation that the lift would be present for him to walk into, as it should have been.
Lady Moss, Stirling’s wife, stated “this was a very unfortunate accident; it could have just as easily been another member of the family stepping into where the lift should have been”.
The family are very relieved that Stirling survived the fall, demonstrating that his body still has the same resilience to injury as it did in his racing days. He is comfortable, following a good night’s rest post surgery, and is well on the road to recovery.
It is expected that it will take up to 6 weeks for him to recover from his injuries.
The family would like to thank everyone, on behalf of Stirling, for their messages of support.

*Please note that Williams made the carbon fibre body of the car only, NOT the lift mechanism or electrics that operate the lift itself or the electrical system that allows the door to open when the lift arrives at the floor it was called from. In this case the door mechanism failed not the lift itself, and as is human nature, having done this thousands of times before, Stirling stepped forward into narrow gap where the lift should have been, see the link on the right for an image of the lift: http://www.twitpic.com/17dxwt

To my first Auto Racing Hero:
Sir Stirling Moss, in 1963 I name my first son after you. You have always been a legion to me. Get well soon. I really do know if you get these things and not being a great person myself you are not missing much. I'm sure that you have been an inspiration to millions and this humble person wishes you; God Speed,

Accident
Get well quickly Stirling, I want to see you driving your Red Osca again. I was at the Autodroma near Portimao and watched your familiar arms length style, it brought back memories of your courageous driving, especially that epic win with Jenks in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Dont let a bloody lift shaft get the better of you!

Super Stirling
Sir Stirling,
For a man in his 80's to fall down 3 floors, survive, and have to go through all the surgery that entailed, all I can say is that you must be made of Titanium. I know men in the prime of their lives that may have been finished off by all that. What a remarkable man you trully are, and I do not use those words lightly.
I hope your recovery is going well. You are in my thoughts.
All the best, Stirling.
Steve (Motor racing fan, Nottingham).
Thank you and get well soon
Sir Stirling,

BEST WISHES SIR STIRLING
BEST WISHES SIR STIRLING FOR A QUICK AND FULL RECOVERY. IT MUST HAVE BEEN A TERRIBLE SHOCK FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FOR YOUR LEGION OF FANS WHEN THEY HEARD OF YOUR ACCIDENT. YOU HAVE BEEN A HERO OF MINE SINCE I WAS GIVEN A DINKY TOY VANWALL WITH ONE S. MOSS AS THE DRIVER BACK IN THE LATE '50s! I WISH I STILL HAD IT! I ALSO SAW YOU DRIVE A "C" TYPE JAG AT THE FORMER AMAROO PARK, SYDNEY IN 1984.
TO SOME EXTENT, I UNDERSTAND YOUR SITUATION AS AROUND THE TIME OF YOUR ACCIDENT I TOO HAD AN ACCIDENT ON MY BICYCLE DURING A CHARITY RIDE FROM SYDNEY TO THE NSW SNOWY MOUNTAINS, SUFFERING ABRASIONS, LEG AND SHOULDER INJURIES. ONE DOESN'T BOUNCE AS WELL IN ONE'S MATURE YEARS AS ONE DID IN THEIR TWENTIES! I'M ON THE MEND NOW AS I TRUST YOU ARE.

Sir Stirling Moss
I was at Goodwood when you had the very serious accident in '62?
I was in a party with Bob Gibson-Jarvie, head of UDT Laystall & after the crash he was heard to remark' hope the engine's all right'.
Shocking! But the engine was about the only Coventry Climax 1.5 litre V8 for the new GP formula.
You have been my hero for 50 years & your Mille Miglia with Denis Jenkinson goes down as one of the greatest drives of all time. GP racing was a doddle compared to that. Proper driving!!
Get well soon

Your resilience is an inspiration
We were saddened to hear of your "shunt" but pleased that you weathered it so well and that you are on the mend. May your recovery from this be one more story of inspiration that we can draw from your amazing lifetime.
Your accident in the lift
I first saw you racing in the 500cc class at Castle Combe whilst I was at school. We met for the first time during the Monaco Historic when Deb Franklin introduced us. Later we met again in Australia House for the Classic Adelaide presentation when you signed a couple of your books. We had a fantastic time in the Classic Adelaide Rally when I drove a Ferrari GT4 in 2004.
Your good friend Chris Mills lives near and we support her charity, Hope for Tomorrow.
Our thoughts are with you for a speedy recovery.
Very Best Wishes

Dear Sir Stirling,
my family and I wish you a speedy and full recovery from your bizzare accident. It is nice to see you can still smile after such an horriffic incident. You have always been a great influence on the lives of so many people. I felt honoured when you spoke to my son and myself at the very first meeting of the Birminghan Street motor race. I don't suppose you will remember but I have a photograph of you driving my FX4 Hackney Carriage.

A fast recovery and a return to the pits soon!
Dear Sir Stirling,
I wish you a speedy recovery following your accident at home and hope it will not be too long before you are able to resume your normal active life. I'm at home recovering from prostate surgery, following the discovery of cancer. As a huge fan of motor racing it was very good omen watching you promote the 'Golden Pants' campaign on Sky News on the day of my operation. It made me feel less apprehensive of the surgery having listened to you on the television. All the best Sir and hope your recovery is speedy and successful.

wishing you a speedy recovery
You have inspired many of us in all kinds of ways and now you have taught us all to look before we leap into lifts. We need you so get better soon.
Get better soon old stick.
Glad to hear you're on the mend our Moss.
My old man often mentioned that you were skilled at getting yourself in trouble. So in seven decades, nothing much has changed eh? ;-)
But he would have been as glad as I am at your recovery.
My heart goes out to your lady and your family, they must have been severely shocked at the time. Poor them.
Regards P Gilbert.
Best Wishes from a fellow sufferer!
Stirling - I was amazed to hear about your bizarre accident. How awful. I can sympathize with you as I also have two broken ankles. I was on the first day of a golfing trip to Portugal recently, walking to the 7th tee pulling my trolley, fairly upbeat as I was playing well. I heard a shout from my playing colleague "watch out I have got my foot stuck on the accelerater"! The next moment, the buggy struck my clubs and brought me to the ground running over both of my feet, breaking both ankles. I am five weeks down the line now and hopefully I will be getting one cast off this week. It is very frustrating but I am sure you, like me, have got a great family and friends support system in place to help.
Wishing you the speediest of recoveries.
It is a good job we have great sport on TV to watch!

Public Response.
"Sir" Stirling: All right, off with the surgical raps, and out with the pins and plates! Anyone who has generated this much response of love, affection and respect for your career in auto racing has to be already healed. I grew up in a newspaper family, started out in the news business myself, switched over to P.R. because at the time it paid more, but during this experience, I have NEVER seen this kind of public response and affection for anyone! Certainly not Presidents of the U.S., Kings and Queens of England, CEO's of major corporations, esteemed surgeons of great hospitals, academics of leading universities, authors, musicians, name them! People who know you and always expect greatness from you, people who have never met you and only have become great fans of yours who think they have experienced the greatest if they simply happened to be at an auto racing event and you were there! I have known you for more than 50 years, always regarded you as one of the very best I have ever known. Now I amend that to say the GREATEST! Bob Henkel

All but your life
Stirling:
One of the few books I put in my office from job to job, company to company, is your "All But My Life." This, Ken Purdy's "Kings of the Road," and Piero Taruffi's "The Art of Motor Racing" have traveled with me from my time as a journalist to my time at several car companies. I was hoping by chance to see you at one of the Concours in the USA this year. Perhaps that will have to wait, as I'd love for you to sign my copy.
Rest up, mend up and be kind to the nurses!

Sir Moss
You are obviously made of something Stirling. I have never met you but R & P Walker love you and I have a lot of respect for them both. So much that I bought a car off of them and crashed it. Very embarassing considering how much they care and look after vehicles but I'll learn from that one!
I hope you have a speedy recovery and I also would love to one day shake your hand.
The kindest regards,

Wishing you a speedy recovery from your latest prang. Looks like the only racing you'll be doing for the next couple of months is Scalextric! Try to keep it in the slot, Stirling, and let the nurses win one once in a while. I know how competitive you are.
