Sadly Stirling's first race in a Porsche RS 61, since his last outing in a similar car back in 1961 at the Nurburgring 1000kms, will have to wait another year. Following an incident on the warm-up lap of today's qualifying session, 13th August, for the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Stirling will no longer be able to race the RS 61 this year.
On Stirling's out lap the car stepped out a wheel onto the grass putting it off the circuit, albeit without coming into contact with the barriers. A second car, also on its warm-up lap, left the circuit and hit the RS 61. Happily Stirling was unhurt, the car however suffered considerable damage, rendering it undriveable for the rest of the Monterey weekend. As this particular weekend was due to be his only race outing in the RS this year, he will now have to wait until 2011, once it is repaired in the United States, to return back behind the wheel of this classic Porsche race car.
Stirling was understandably very dissappointed, as was his wife Susie, following the incident, given that this is a car he had long sought after and was looking forward tremendously to racing it, so much more so, following his serious accident back in March.
The days group 1A time sheets were topped by Ed Nigro, who placed third in last years race, in a 1960 Lola Mk.I from Donald Orosco in a Lotus 15 and Rob Walton in a Maserati T60.

Superman T shirt
Dear Stirling,
Sorry I missed you at Monterey. My Junior High students have been watching your recovery with great interest. (They know you have been my hero since I was their age.) I was hoping to have you sign the Superman T shirt I wear when I race at the local track. Would it be possible to mail it to you for a signature? If not, I'll look forward to seeing you next year with that at Monterey with that Porsche!

Dear Sir Stirling,
My name is Bill Davis and I've been a fan of yours since the late 1950's when my father brougt your career to my attention. As a resident of Northern California at the time, it was with great delight that my father brought me to the Monterey Grand Prix in 1960. Not only did I see you compete, but win in the Lotus. We came back in 1961 for an instant replay and missed you greatly in 1962. We attended the race for about 10 years after 1962 until the Mc Laren era came to an end. (Next to Dan Gurney's Lotus-Ford, I loved those orange cars best.)
I still attend the Rolex Reunion on a regular basis but unfortunately I didn't attend this year.
I was saddened by the incident involving your RS61, but I'm elated that you escaped injury. Please let me know if you plan to attend the 2011 event. I'd also like to know if you plan on attending any events in the Western USA later this year or in 2011. I'd enjoy seeing you and would bring along my Monterey Grand Prix race programs if you'd care to see them.
Thanks in advance,
take care and be well.
With warmest regards,
Bill Davis II
Commiserations!
Sorry that your outing with the RF61 didn't go as well as you'd have liked.
We look forward to your next outing with the OSCA!

Dear Striling,
What a pity about the RS61 being hit while you hadn't even started yet.....it'sgood to see you back in a racing car though.
Sorry I missed you there; I understand Laurence did see you and Suzie.
Had a great weekend with two wins with the Lotus.
Hope to see you at Goodwood!

It's not his fault.
The car did it all by itself, just like when Stirling tried to pass everyone on the inside with the Aston DBR2 a few years back. I still can't believe that people with experience are trying this stunt instead of passing on the outside where there is no one and where you can carry so much more speed into turn 2.
Never mind.
