Fun Things - Florida Designs

Other Fun Things

Stirling Moss has always been a fan of innovative architecture. His current home in London’s Mayfair, which he built on land reclaimed after the blitz, is a model of James Bond inspired design, complete with master control panels, descending tables and a host of other labour saving gadgets – we are still looking for the button that catapults unlucky guests from their chairs into a fiery pit!

Stirling’s interest in architecture, and indeed gadgetry, has not diminished with age. When he announced in January that he had bought a piece of land near a canal in Deerfield Beach (Florida) on which he was hoping to build a unique, technology-filled home, we couldn’t wait to follow the story.

One of the initial problems Stirling and his wife Susie faced was finding the right architect – one who was able to bring the home Stirling had envisaged to life. Three months have passed since we last spoke to him, and Stirling has informed us that, at last, his search has born fruit and that he is delighted to be working with Bill Chapin, former President of the American Institute of Architects, on the project.

Moss and Chapin are still working on the final plans for the house. For Moss, it’s essential that it should be green, so the design will certainly incorporate a variety of environmentally friendly technologies and techniques, including solar panels and water saving devices.

Moss has also informed us that he was particularly pleased that, “Bill wasn’t even put off with the amount of gadgets that he wants in the house”. Moss adds jovially, that he is currently working on a design for a robotic ‘dumb waiter’ which will be able to do various unaided chores.

We will be following the build as it progresses and bringing you the latest news here.
