Stirling Moss Race History: 1961 German Grand Prix Nurburgring

Stirling, driving the Lotus 18/21, rightly regards this race as one of his best F1 victories. Having been advised by Dunlop not to use the new D12 rain tyre for the duration of the race as conditions were likely to dry during the course of its running, Stirling decided to take the risk and run them on the rears. His risk paid off with the track staying just damp enough to perserve the rears long enough for them to come back to him as the rain fell in the closing stages of the race, allowing him to take the lead and pull away from von Trips to win the race by 22 seconds.

With tyre choice and running times likely to play a deciding role in the 2010 Formula 1 Championship, its refreshing to see that the driver even back then, could make the difference and make the tyres work for him based on how he treated during the race to make best use of the compound and conditions.
